Carlton is a suburb of Melbourne 2 km north from Melbourne’s CBD.

Carlton has a sizeable tertiary student population, local and international, due to its proximity to RMIT University and the University of Melbourne. Victorian terraces are common throughout the area and house many student, however residential buildings developed during the 1990s and early 2000s  targeted the international students and have subsequently transformed the once low-rise skyline of Swanston Street, so that its predominant height is about 10-11 storeys.

Carlton is well known for its “Little Italy” precinct on Lygon Street. Carlton was the place where the city’s famous café culture was born with the arrival of Melbourne’s first espresso machine at one of Lygon street’s Italian-owned cafes in the 1950s.

Carlton is also recognized for its Victorian architecture and its European-style squares (University Square, Lincoln Square, Argyle Place and MacArthur Place) and the Carlton Gardens. The Carlton Gardens were originally designed for the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880. The Exhibition buildings and the surrounding Carlton Gardens are now World Heritage listed, one of Australia’s few man-made sites with World Heritage status.
